Dr. Sophie Coulon’s visit to UWA’s BITA Team

Dr. Sophie Coulon, a postdoctoral research fellow at the ARC Training Centre for Behavioural Insights for Technology Adoption (BITA) based at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), visited Perth from 21st to 25th October, 2024. During her trip, she engaged with BITA colleagues at the Centre for Agricultural Economics and Development, strengthening ties within the training centre.

BITA is dedicated to addressing behavioural barriers that hinder the adoption and diffusion of innovative technologies. The centre integrates insights from behavioural economics, social marketing, and social psychology to solve challenges throughout the innovation lifecycle, from conception and design to market implementation and evaluation. It also serves as a platform for PhD candidates and early-career researchers to build networks with leading academics, industry professionals, and government stakeholders.

Dr. Coulon’s research focuses on the psychology of ageing, particularly ageism, retirement transitions, and the opportunities presented by an ageing workforce. Her work is highly relevant in addressing the challenges associated with demographic shifts and fostering inclusive workplace environments.

Hosted by Professor Marit Kragt and Dr. German Puga, both of whom specialise in applying behavioural economics to agriculture, they explored potential research synergies and discussed local applications of behavioural insights.

As part of her visit, Dr. Coulon delivered a seminar titled "An Introduction to Diary Studies" on 23rd October 2024. Diary studies, also known as experience sampling methods, involve repeated sampling of participants’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in their everyday lives. Her presentation highlighted the method’s advantages in capturing nuanced, dynamic data and its broad applicability across disciplines. Dr. Coulon provided practical guidance on designing and analysing diary studies, including tips on data collection and multi-level modelling. The session was highly interactive and well-received, inspiring attendees to integrate these methods into their research.

Dr. Coulon’s visit demonstrated BITA’s collaborative spirit; the interactions fostered during her visit highlight BITA’s role as an interdisciplinary research hub, reinforcing the importance of collaboration across diverse fields. Other researchers from the BITA training centre are encouraged to visit CAED to build capacity in their behavioural economics understanding.
