On Friday, 6th September, the Western Australian Branch of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) held its annual mini conference at the University of Western Australia. The event featured 13 diverse presenters, including researchers from CAED and CEEP, government representatives, industry professionals, international visitors, and early career researchers, creating a dynamic platform to explore pressing topics in agricultural and resource economics.
Keynote Presentation: Dr Bronwyn Claire
A standout moment of the conference was the keynote address delivered by Dr Bronwyn Claire, Senior Climate Specialist at Ortec Finance, who offered valuable insights on how financial markets are adapting to climate risks. Dr Claire highlighted the increasing role that financial markets play in addressing global sustainability challenges, sparking engaging discussions among participants. With leadership experience at the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and KPMG, Dr Claire’s contributions continue to drive climate scenario analysis. Learning about these diverse work experiences provided a source of inspiration to the early-career researchers present at the conference, who were keen to learn about different pathways their careers could follow.
Focus on Early Career Researchers
One of the conference’s key strengths is its commitment to supporting early career researchers, providing them with a platform to present their work, receive constructive feedback, and engage in meaningful discussions with senior academics across Western Australia. This collaborative environment not only fosters professional growth but also enhances the academic community as a whole.
Diverse Range of Topics
The presentations covered a wide spectrum of topics, from productivity gains and agricultural sustainability to resource economics policy, delivering valuable insights for both researchers and industry professionals. The blend of local and international perspectives underscored the global nature of the challenges and trends affecting agriculture and resource economics today.
Building Future Collaborations
Beyond its role as a knowledge-sharing platform, the conference provided a crucial networking opportunity, encouraging collaboration among academics, professionals, and policymakers. It remains a pivotal event for advancing discussions on shaping a more sustainable future for agriculture and resource economics.
Looking Ahead
The AARES WA Branch conference continues to serve as a vital platform for idea exchange, fostering the next generation of leaders in agricultural and resource economics, and paving the way for new collaborations.
