The Canadian Farmer Adoption of Agri-environmental and Climate Mitigative Beneficial Management Practices - Behavioural Insights for Agri-Environmental Program and Policy Design .
Abstract
Governments across Canada and elsewhere are committing increasing policy budgets towards meeting environmental objectives in agriculture. With improved production technologies becoming available, progress is possible if producers can be swayed to adopt Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs). Yet, despite decades of incentive programs, producer uptake is still low, particularly across Western Canada. A key challenge in advancing the adoption of agri-environmental BMPs remains the widespread diffusion of program solutions that are widely acceptable to diverse groups of producers. We employ factorial survey experiments, or vignettes, a novel experimental method in applied economics, to investigate Canadian producers’ preferences and acceptability of water quality and soil-health specific BMP programs and their related components. Our specific focus lies on testing the extent to which different behavioural nudges may incentivise individuals’ willingness to participate in BMP programming. Our results offer new insights into both the motivations and barriers to producers’ BMP program participation decisions and overall willingness to provide environmentally beneficial and/or climate-mitigative goods and services increasingly demanded by society and urban populations.

About the Speaker
Sven Anders is Professor of Agricultural Economics and Food Marketing in the Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology at the University of Alberta.
His research interests are in the economics of food markets and supply chains. Using econometric and experimental economic methods, Sven’s research seeks to provide insights into producer and consumer behaviour with a focus on advancing food policy and welfare outcomes. Through his research, Sven takes a keen interest in the many relationships between agricultural production and food security under changing climatic and agri-environmental conditions.
About the Lecture Series
The Environmental Policy Lecture is an initiative of the Western Australian Branch of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES WA), The University of Western Australia Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy (CEEP), and Centre of Agricultural Economics and Development (CAED).
Each year, we will invite a leading national and international speaker to discuss important environmental or natural resource issues. The series will also provide the opportunity for students, academics, policy and industry professionals, and members of the public to engage in these topical discussions.
