Dr Germán Puga visits New Orleans to attend the AAEA Annual Meeting 2024

Our new postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Germán Puga, recently travelled to New Orleans in July to attend and present at the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association's 2024 Annual Meeting. The AAEA 2024 Annual Meeting was a grand affair, bringing together economists, researchers, and agricultural experts from all over. There were several concurrent presentation sessions, symposiums, and formal meetings, plus a “Quiet Room” for attendees to take a break from the stimulation of the event.

Dr Puga’s presentation was titled, “What explains changes in grape varietal mixes in Australia’s wine regions?”

Before joining CAED, Dr Puga was investigating the evolving landscape of Australia’s wine industry. His presentation was based on a forthcoming paper he co-authored with Professor Kym Anderson, who leads the Wine Economics Research Centre at University of Adelaide.

Dr Puga’s research aims to understand the factors driving changes in grape varietal mixes, and how wine producers can adapt to shifting market demands and climatic conditions. This research is particularly timely given the current crisis of wine overstocks faced by the Australian wine industry.

The trip was kindly supported by the AARES-AAEA Heading North Award.  The AARES-AAEA Heading North Award is a fantastic initiative that supports researchers in broadening their horizons and sharing their work globally. It is great to see Dr Puga taking full advantage of this opportunity, representing UWA and Australian research with pride.

“The AAEA gathers more than one thousand agricultural economists. The highlight of the conference is being able to network and exchange ideas with key people in academia, industry, and government.” said Dr Puga.

He strongly advises early career researchers to apply for the next round of the AARES-AAEA Heading North Award.
